I don’t often get that many chances to eat at the Cinnamon Snail. They mostly spend their days in NYC. For us in NJ they are at the Red Bank Farmers Market on Sundays which we won’t go to in the summer because the traffic home is an absolute nightmare! On Thursdays they are in Jersey City at the Grove Street Farmers Market. We are close to J.C., my sister lives down the street from the market, but it’s still rare that I can go.
I usually try to go when my sister is teaching a craft class at her friends shop called Kanibal Home. The keyword in that sentence is “try”. Even when I’m in town on the right night I usually still miss it because parking takes forever, the lines are crazy long and then I’ll miss the class I’m taking. Last night though everything went perfectly! We found 2 parking spots right away. (One picking up my sis and one in front of our friends shop). Since we were early from not circling for 1 hour looking for parking I left everyone at the store and speed walked to the market. The market wasn’t there but the Cinnamon Snail still showed up! Thank goodness because I was starving!
The line also wasn’t as long as other lines I’ve encountered there. I’ve waited 30 minutes to order and just as long or longer to get my food. Its worth it though!
For dinner I chose an old favorite of mine the Lemongrass 5-Spice Seitan. It has curried cashews and wasabi mayo among other things. Its incredible!
I really wanted to pick up some donuts, especially a creme brule donut, but by the time I got there all the donuts I wanted were sold out. Most of the pastry case was empty. It was quite a sad sight. I decided to try 3 new pastries that I haven’t ordered from them before.
First up for the pastries was a berry and cheese danish. I had it as a late night snack when I came home from the class with ink stained hands. It was really good! I never was a fan of Danishes in my pre-vegan day’s. I love them now though!
Breakfast today was a Pear Turnover with Lavender. This was even better then the danish above. I was wondering what they did to get the lavender flavor that was so prominent, in a good way, so I opened the danish up and saw actual lavender flowers mixed in with the pear filling. I’ll definitely be buying this again.
The one pastry I haven’t eaten yet is a Chocolate Raspberry Danish. I’m sure it’s just as great as the other pastries I’ve eaten in the last 12 hours. :) I might even share it with my husband tonight after the kids are in bed.
For anyone visiting NYC or NJ if you have a chance to eat from The Cinnamon Snail please do. You will not regret it. They are amazing! 5-spice Lemongrass Seitan
The Cinnamon Snail is at the Red Bank, NJ, Farmers Market on Sundays. Its not possible for us to go down to them during the beach season because traffic home on a Sunday is horrendous! A 1 our trip can take over 2 hours! So since we were south of Red Bank on our vacation we traveled UP to Red Bank in the morning to hit up the Cinnamon Snail food truck. Most importantly it was without the kids! They stayed back at the beach house with my mother in law.
It was still breakfast time when we arrived but we both decided lunch would be for breakfast. Since breakfast for dinner is a thing then lunch for breakfast could be a thing…right? I ordered the 5-spice Lemongrass Seitan sandwich. It was amazing. Probably my new favorite sandwich from the truck. It is loaded with cashews. Cashews on a sandwich. Brilliant. I love cashews and this sandwich had a ton of them! Along with the load of cashews is also arugula, wasabi mayo and chili sauce.
Korean BBQ Seitan
My husband ordered the Korean BBQ Seitan sandwich. I’ve had it before and it’s always delicious. It’s seitan with chili butter, kimchi and greens. You can’t beat that.
Box of pastry!
I loved when Adams daughter asked if we would be needing a small or large box for the pastry’s. We went with a large box and ordered a few donuts, tarts and other sweets. Everything was amazing. I especially loved the S’Mores Donut and the turtle bar. This box of treats was very popular when we brought it back to the beach house.
Across from The Cinnamon Snail is a truck called Freezy Freeze that makes Ice Cream per order with the help of SCIENCE!….A.K.A. Liquid Nitrogen. All flavors can be made vegan and they have quite the list of toppings.
I have yet to try their Ice Cream since I’m alway’s there to load up my stomach with some Snail goodies. I did order their cold brewed coffee with coconut milk and it was a delightful iced coffee. I’ve promised myself I’ll order an ice cream while I’m waiting for my Snail order to be made. (I’ve waited 45 minutes once. Totally worth it though.)
We vacation in Ocean Grove, NJ every year. Every year it gets easier and easier to be vegan down there. From Porta and Mogo in Asbury Park which is just a short boardwalk walk North or Kaya’s Kitchen in Belmar just a short car ride 2-3 towns South. It used to be that I would have to bring a ton of food with me. I’d have to pack a cooler. With 2 kids now I don’t have room for a cooler anymore besides a small frozen lunch bag thing that I bought awhile ago. I ended bringing down: Earth Balance and a cashew spread that I made. So I appreciate the vegan options that are popping up all over the Jersey Shore. Here are a few of the eats from down there. I’ll have a separate post about Kaya’s and the Cinnamon Snail coming later in the week or two.
My mother in law would toast some bread with tomatoes, herbs and cheese for everyone. I asked that the cheese not be added to mine and I topped mine with a cashew spread I made the day before we left and brought down with us. That spread came in handy while I was down there! I was glad I brought it! It’s cashews, garlic, lemon, water, salt and pepper blended in the Vitamix.
Local Ocean Grove coffee house The Barbaric Bean offers soy or almond milk for their coffee drinks and had a gluten free vegan peanut butter cookie. I’ll admit that I wasn’t to excited for these cookies when I saw them. I wanted to try them anyway and I was glad I did. They were really good! I hope they have them next time we are there. Pre-vegan I LOVED the scones at The Barbaric Bean. They were the best I ever had. I wish they would consider making vegan versions of them.
On Sunday’s the Cinnamon Snail is in Red Bank, NJ at the Farmers Market. I brought back a large box of treats and two of these savory seitan mustard cashew tarts. Peter and I each had one for breakfast later in the week. They are one of my favorite things that the Cinnamon Snail has to offer.
We all know my obsession with bagels. Especially bagels with Earth Balance and nooch. This part of NJ isn’t known for there bagels like the part of NJ that I live in. I found some decent looking ones at a bakery in town and they didn’t disappoint! Me and kids were happy that I remembered to bring some Nooch down with us.
The Iced Coffee in some of the pictures was beach house homemade. I brought down my large french press and made some cold brew coffee with some almond milk that my mother in law picked up at a grocery store down there. I bring that french press on all our vacations.
Food trucks seem to be all the rage around the U.S.A. Portland has a whole bunch of them and Austin has quite a few too. Some of them are even vegan and I’ve always been jealous of other bloggers going to these trucks and getting some of the most delicious looking food I’ve never eaten…until now! New Jersey has it’s first ever vegan food truck called The Cinnamon Snail!!! They first started serving food in Hoboken, NJ on Valentines Day of this year. Peter and I attended that glorious opening day for breakfast and have been devoted followers of The Cinnamon Snail ever since. We have even driven down to Red Bank, NJ on Sundays to visit the Snail parked at the farmers market. Everything we have tried has tasted amazing from the most kick ass Breakfast Burritos to Pancakes to Seitan Sandwiches. Reno is a big fan of Adam’s, the owner, donuts. There are multiple flavors each week along with other cookies and desserts. They will be closing up shop soon for the winter so we are planning one last Hoboken trip next week to get our fix in before we have to wait until warmer weather next year.
